No NExT for 2019 MBBS Batch; To be implemented for 2020 MBBS batch

The Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has confirmed that the National Exit Test (NExT) will not be mandatory for the 2019 MBBS batch. It will be applicable for the ‘20 MBBS batch.

At the same time All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will conduct a sample mock test for the  final year MBBS students .  The primary aim of the mock test is to help the aspirants to become familiar with the exam pattern.  The test will be sheduled to be conducted on July 28, 2023 . Aspirants can apply for the mock exit test from  28 June 2023, until July 10, 2023, through the official website – next.aiimsexams.ac.in.

What is NExT?

National Exit Test or NExT is the  uniform national medical licensure exam for MBBS graduates. The examination serves as a common licentiate exam to practise modern medicine, for merit-based admission to postgraduate courses, and as a screening exam for foreign medical graduates who want to practise in India. It replaces both the Foreign Medical Graduates Exam (FMGE) and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Postgraduate (NEET-PG).

Exam Pattern

The exam consists of two parts – Step 1 & Step 2 both held twice a year. The first step is a computer based examination consisting of multiple choice questions (MCQs). The second one is the clinical examination, which tests the practical skills of the aspirants.

Step 1 exam  has six subject papers, and applied aspects of all other subjects of MBBS — including forensic medicine, toxicology, and community medicine — will be mainstreamed into the relevant clinical subjects. In each paper, 10% of the questions will be from the applied aspects of related subjects.

Step 2 , is  the  comprehensive practical examination, which evaluates the seven key subjects. They include medicine, surgery, paediatrics, ophthalmology, and orthopaedics.

Foreign medical graduates who want to practise in India will have to appear in NExT Step 1, do the internship, and then clear NExT Step 2 to become eligible to practise in India.

How do I apply?

If you are a medical graduate looking to apply for NExT, the following are the steps that you need to follow.

  • Enter your login details.
  • Upload all the required documents as per the instructions.
  • Complete the payment fees, if required.
  • Double check all the details carefully and submit the form.
  • Download a copy of the submitted form and keep it for future reference.

Fees Structure

As per the  notification issued by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), general and OBC candidates will have to pay Rs 2,000 each to appear in the mock test. SC, ST, and EWS applicants will have to pay Rs 1,000. Persons with benchmark disabilities will not have to pay any fee.

“No student is required to undergo any stress. I’m not bringing the 2019 batch under NExT. I will bring the 2020 batch under it. NExT will not be held this year,” said the minister.  He was addressing the students at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur during the inauguration of a critical care unit.

Starting from the beginning, several medical associations, medical professionals, and MBBS students were not satisfied with this new scheme. Reacting to the response of the Union Minister, several doctors and MBBS students thanked the minister and asked the National Medical Commission (NMC) to make changes in the new exam before implementing it for students.
