MRCPI OBG exam: How to conquer the hurdle in one go

Are you a medical professional or an OB-GYN specialist planning to establish your career in Ireland? Consider pursuing the MRCPI (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland), which could be the ideal choice for you. The MRCPI qualification stands as a testament to your expertise and opens doors to exciting career opportunities in Ireland. To clear this challenging exam in one go, it’s crucial to grasp its structure and effective preparation strategies.

Understanding the exam format

The MRCPI OBG exam consists of two components, Part 2 written and Part 2 OSCE/clinical. But, before you sit the MRCPI Part 2 Written you must have successfully passed MRCPI Part 1 (General Medicine or Paediatrics) or possess an exemption from this requirement based on a recognised equivalent qualification.

MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written

The MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written examination consists of one exam paper with 100 Single Best Answer questions. Candidates are given three hours to complete the exam. Each question presents a clinical scenario (vignette) followed by five possible answers, from which the candidate must select the single best answer.

MRCPI OBG Part 2 Clinical

This examination consists of two components, an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and a clinical exam. The OSCE comprises seven ten-minute stations and at least one rest station (short break) for preparation.

At the clinical exam, you will see one long clinical case in either obstetrics or gynaecology. You have 25 minutes fully observed with two examiners to take a history and examine the patient/role player before discussing the case with the examiners. The clinical component is simulated, this component will not be based in a hospital and will not have patient interaction.

Preparation strategies for the MRCPI OBG exam

A comprehensive and well-structured study plan is essential for effective preparation for the MRCPI OBG exams. Make sure to choose the top-notch materials and start your preparation at the earliest.
