MRCP; All you need to know about eligibility criteria

The Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) is a prestigious postgraduate medical qualification awarded to physicians aspiring to pursue specialty training in the UK. It serves as a prerequisite for any physician seeking a specialty training post in the country. If you are interested in the eligibility details for MRCP examinations, we are here to guide you.

The MRCP examination evaluates both medical knowledge and clinical skills of the candidates and comprises three main parts – Part 1 and Part 2.

Check Your Eligibility

International medical graduates from any country can sit for the MRCP examinations if they fulfill certain eligibility criteria: Here the eligibility criterias.

The aspirants must possess a medical degree from a recognized institution. The medical degree should be awarded by a university acknowledged by the General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom.

Aspirants must hold a current medical registration with the GMC or a recognized medical regulatory authority outside of the United Kingdom. Without a current medical registration, candidates will not be eligible for MRCP.

A minimum of 12 months of postgraduate medical training is necessary for candidates planning to take the MRCP Part 1 exam. This training program must be approved by the GMC or a recognized medical regulatory authority outside of the United Kingdom.

To be eligible for MRCP Part 2, candidates must have passed Part 1 within the last seven years. Additionally, they should have at least 36 months of clinical experience in total, which can be a combination of pre- and post-registration experience.

For MRCP PACES aspirants, passing the Part 1 examination within the last 7 years is mandatory before taking PACES. While it is not a strict requirement to complete Part 2 before attending PACES, the Royal College advises candidates to do so.

MRCP is a highly valuable qualification for physicians practicing internal medicine at an advanced level. If you meet the eligibility criteria, we encourage you to apply for the MRCP examination and start your preparation as early as possible.

Remember, MRCP opens doors to advanced medical practice and specialized training, making it a significant milestone in your medical career.
