The MRCOG Part 3 exam is primarily a clinical evaluation. In addition, the exam assesses the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies of candidates. Those who pass this exam will be further conferred the title of MRCOG. In addition, they become the members of the college. Lastly, this exam facilitates the progression of UK trainees from core training to higher training. (ST6 and ST7).
Layout Of MRCOG Part 3 Exam
The MRCOG Part 3 is composed of 14 tasks in a circuit. Besides, each task is designed considering one of the 14 modules mentioned in the syllabus.
Each of the MRCOG Part 3 module is assessed on the basis of five domains:
- Patient Safety
- Communication with patients and their relatives
- Communication with colleagues
- Information gathering
- Applied clinical knowledge
The duration of each task is 12 minutes. This includes the initial reading time of 2 minutes.
Monitored By Examiners
All tasks will be overseen by a trained clinical examiner. Moreover, a trained lay examiner will closely monitor four of the 14 tasks. Lastly, the lay examiner assesses the domains of communication, patient safety and information gathering from the view point of the patient.
Different Kinds of Tasks
MRCOG Part 3 exam includes two types of tasks:
Simulated Patient or Colleague Tasks
In these tasks, the candidate interacts with an actor who has undergone training and is fully informed about the role he or she is about to play. Furthermore, the actor will have access to necessary information related to the case. In addition, a few scripted questions will be given to the actor, in case needed.
Structured Discussion Tasks
Such tasks involve the candidate interacting directly with a clinical examiner. The examiner will further have detailed instructions about the task and a list of questions. In addition, the questions will be used to prompt the candidate or to move the task on. This will further ensure that the candidate does not run out of time. As the scenario evolves, the examiner gives the candidate further information and asks further questions.
MRCOG Part 3 Examination Dates
MRCOG Part 3 exam will be carried out twice in 2024 in the months of May and November respectively. The venues of the exams are Chennai, Malaysia, UAE, London, Delhi and Singapore.
