MRCEM Primary is the first hurdle you need to cross before achieving the coveted RCEM membership.
It’s a theory examination, consisting of 180 questions in the MCQ (Multiple-choice questions) format with the single best answer. Setting the Pass Mark- Angoff Method explained
MRCEM Primary exam passing criterion is based on the Angoff Method, which is approved by the GMC and Academy of Royal Colleges. A Panel of emergency medicine consultants, who are experts in MRCEM training and question paper, thoroughly reviews each question. They estimate the number of minimally competent candidates who would answer each question correctly. Then, these experts assign a score based on their assessment. If there are differences in ratings, discussions take place to reevaluate the scores.
Each question’s final Angoff score is then averaged and sum of the Angoff scores is calculated to determine the pass mark. Based on the difficulty level of the exam questions, the pass mark may vary slightly.
