A Closer Look at the New Limited Attempts Policy Implemented by MRCP (UK) in January 2024

The MRCP(UK) Limited Attempts Policy will be altered starting in January 2024, as per RCP’s announcement in November 2021. The maximum number of attempts candidates may take at each stage of the MRCP journey (MRCP Part 1/MRCP Part 2 Written/MRCP PACES) has altered in accordance with the new policy. The recently implemented regulation allows applicants to retake each MRCP (UK) section up to six times. Those who make six attempts will be granted one extraordinary second chance. There will only be one extraordinary second try allowed.

Extraordinary Second Attempt

Applicants may apply for a remarkable seventh try at any stage of the MRCP(UK) process. Those who ask for another chance have to show that they have taken educational steps that will help them pass. To find areas that need work, it’s a good idea to talk about past exam efforts with your academic supervisor or a more experienced colleague. Create a lesson plan that focuses on these topics.

Prior to applying for a second chance, be sure you have completed any necessary additional learning. If you plan to retake the exam, it is best to speak with your educational supervisor beforehand. Fill out the extraordinary additional attempt form once you have a good understanding of everything. Recall that requests for extra attempts due to extraordinary circumstances will not be granted by MRCP(UK). In order to take the exam, candidates must certify that they are fit.

How Can I Request an Extraordinary Chance to Try Again?

Fill out the Exceptional additional attempt form by providing all the necessary information. The director of the training programme and your educational supervisor, or their equivalents, must attest to the fact that you have improved your knowledge and abilities. Their signature of confirmation indicates that there is a good chance you will pass on your next try. After that, a copy of the form needs to be scanned by your educational supervisor and sent via email to your college of entry. Make sure the email sent on the form comes from the work email account of your supervisor in education.

In addition, ensure that forms are turned in no later than two weeks prior to start of the applicable application period. Five working days are typically needed for the form to be received. You can apply for a second chance at the test if your application is approved by the MRCP(UK) Regulatory Sub-Group.
