PLAB, short for Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board, is a two-part exam that acts as a gateway for international medical graduates to obtain registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and thereby gain the licence to practise medicine in the UK.
What is PLAB
The exam is conducted by the General Medical Council (GMC) to evaluate the aspiring candidates and make sure that they are capable of meeting the standards of practising medicine in the UK.
A primary medical qualification from any institute recognised by the World Directory of Medical Schools is the exam criteria. Along with clinical or internship experience and a minimum IELTS score of 7.5.
PLAB Exam Format
The PLAB 1 exam is three hours long and filled with 180 multiple-choice questions in a best-of-five-question format that assesses the candidate’s theoretical knowledge. PLAB 2 assesses the candidate’s clinical knowledge through an OSCE (objective structured clinical exam)Â consisting of a two-hour test that includes 18 real-life situations.
The Global Benefits of PLAB
The exam is famous among medical professionals as a way to gain a licence for medical practice in the UK. But it is also a well-recognised certificate for granting eligibility for medical practice to other candidates.
Although there are a lot of differences in further requirements, many countries like Australia, Canada, the UAE, Ireland, Scotland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and many others recognise the PLAB examination as having similar requirements as their own stringent methods of evaluating.
Saudi Arabia and Dubai take this as a sole guarantee of skills, while some countries require aspirants to have a few more years of experience or pass some country-based examinations.
PLAB is a multifunctional examination that could give you the wings to fly to not just the UK but to many other countries.
