The FRCS Ophthal Part 3 is a far cry from parts 1 and 2. Furthermore, FRCS Ophthal Part 3 comprises two practical examinations in place of a written exam. It includes a structured oral examination and a clinical examination. In addition, candidates are supposed to attend both the examinations on the very same day.
Structured Oral Examination
The structured oral examination comprises two examiners asking a set of questions to the candidate. There are three sections. Besides, duration of each section is 20 minutes and each section covers the following:
- Lids, Oculoplastic, and Anterior Segment
- Posterior Segment and Glaucoma
- Neurology, Motility, and General Medicine
You will meet two examiners for each of these three sections. One examiner will ask questions for ten minutes. The other examiner will further ask different questions for the remaining 10 minutes. Besides, some questions may contain images. Regarding marking of the structured oral exam, you will be given a mark from six of the examiners.
Clinical Examination
The clinical examination is divided into four sections. Each one is 12 minutes in duration. Each of the four sections cover:
- Anterior Segment Disorders
- Posterior Segment Disorders
- Neuro-ophthalmic and ocular motility disorders
- Oculoplastic and Lid Disorders
You will rotate between four rooms during the clinical exam. You have to complete each 12-minute section there. The exam involves a clinical scenario. The candidates will be further instructed to examine two to three patients per room. Findings are discussed with both the patient and the examiner during this time. You will meet with eight examiners in total, all of which will give you a mark each.
