MRCP: Learn More About This Gateway to Higher Specialist Training

MRCP(UK) offers postgraduate medical qualifications for doctors. Furthermore, these qualifications are for candidates who are gearing up for higher specialist training on behalf of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians of London.

The qualifications include MRCP(UK) Diploma and 12 Specialty Certificate Examinations (SCEs).

The MRCP(UK) examinations have a significant role to play in the educational experience of physicians in the UK and internationally. In addition, they facilitate continuance of professional development.

The Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK) Diploma is required for physicians who are interested in taking up training in a medically-related specialty in the UK.

The Specialty Certificate Examinations (SCEs) further helps to evaluate your knowledge against an internationally accepted benchmark. They represent the volume of knowledge required of a newly qualified specialist in your discipline of choice.

About MRCP(UK) Examinations

The MRCP(UK) examination tests the skills, knowledge and behaviour of doctors in training. It is composed of three examinations.

MRCP Part 1 is made up of two three-hour multiple-choice question papers. They both deal with knowledge and understanding of the clinical sciences.

MRCP Part 2 Written is also composed of three three-hour multiple-choice question papers. They further deal with diagnosis, investigation, management and prognosis of patients.

MRCP PACES consists of a series of five clinical stations. Each of them is evaluated by two independent examiners.

This Diploma is usually taken during the two-year period of general professional training (GPT) in medicine. You need to register with the UK General Medical Council beforehand.

The SCEs consist of 2 three-hour multiple-choice question papers delivered through computer-based testing throughout the world. A list of specialties and further details are available on the MRCP(UK) website.

The exam is an entry qualification into higher specialist training for doctors who want to become specialist registrars.
